NICM Blackmores Institute Scholarship Programme: PhD

Western Sydney University's National Institute of Complementary Medicine (NICM) is Australia's leader in complementary medicine research and policy. Seed funded by the Commonwealth and State Governments, NICM plays a key national role in ensuring Australians have access to reliable evidence on complementary medicines and treatments in wide use. The Institute provide leadership and support for strategically directed research into complementary medicine and translation of evidence into clinical practice and relevant policy to benefit the health of all Australians. As an Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) 5* ranking institute, NICM is globally recognised for its world-class research and innovations in complementary medicine.

An exciting opportunity is available for two highly motivated and dynamic PhD candidates in the field of nutritional and herbal medicine to join NICM's team of world-class researchers.

The PhD candidates will undertake specific individual research projects which investigate complementary medicine treatments. NICM invites applications for the PhD projects described below:

  • PhD #1: Chinese herbal medicine 
    This PhD project will explore the clinical application of Chinese herbal medicine in mental health: the management of sleep disorders, anxiety or depression. This project will be expected to undertake a clinical trial amongst other activities. This project is proposed to be supervised by Professor Alan Bensoussan.
  • PhD #2: Western herbal medicine: An integrative approach
    This PhD project is an open study in western herbal or nutritional medicine. Our areas of interest include: cancer; neurocognition and mental health; cardiovascular and metabolic disease; women's health. This project may involve pre-clinical laboratory and/or clinical research. 
    The lead supervisor of this project will be confirmed pending on topic of interest.

The PhD scholarships are funded in partnership with NICM and the Blackmores Institute.
