Equal Opportunity Act - Guideline for General Practices when providing services

EThe Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission (The Commission) has released a new guideline, Guideline for General Practices: Complying with the Equal Opportunity Act 2010 when providing services.

The guideline is aimed at those who provide services in a general practice, and provides guidance on obligations under the Equal Opportunity Act 2010 when it comes to discrimination against people using services in a general practice. The Commission consulted widely with community organisations, employer organisations, government departments and other stakeholders to develop the guideline.

This guideline is made under section 148 of the Equal Opportunity Act.  While the guideline is not legally binding, a court or tribunal may consider whether a person has complied with it when hearing a complaint of discrimination.

The guideline is available online at humanrightscommission.vic.gov.au/guidelines

The Commission is running training for people who provide services in general practices.
