ASQA takes over regulation of VET sector

From the 1st July 2011, the responsibility for regulating Vocational Education & Training (VET) will transfer to the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA).

ASQA will become the Australia’s national regulator for vocational education and training.

There will be a transition period which will affect registered training organisations (RTO’s) and the owners of accredited VET courses and will involve:

  • Transferring RTO registration and records from state and territory regulators to ASQA
  • Transferring course accreditation from state and territory regulators to ASQA

ASQA will have stronger regulatory powers including sanctions, civil and criminal penalties. The powers are designed to regulate training providers and assist with the management of poorly performing training providers. ASQA will have  dedicated complaints team.
