Severe Allergic Reaction (anaphylaxis) for Complementary Health Care Practitioners

NSW Health is pleased to provide the fact sheet Severe Allergic Reaction (Anaphylaxis) & Complementary Health Care: Guidelines for Complementary Health Care Practitioners, which has been developed following consultation with key stakeholder organisations on issues relating to food. The purpose of the document is to define anaphylaxis and explain why individuals at risk of anaphylaxis need a comprehensive medical management plan from a specialist.

With the rising prevalence of childhood allergies, there has been an increased need for resources to effectively support individuals at risk of anaphylaxis and their families. It is the responsibility of all health professionals to be informed about anaphylaxis and ensure that individuals who would be at risk of having a severe allergic reaction access appropriate specialist services for diagnosis, management and support.

These guidelines aim to assist complementary health care practitioners to recognise when a patient is at risk of anaphylaxis, to encourage the patient's referral to an appropriate medical practitioner, and contribute to a chain of events that may save lives.
