An Introduction to Chinese Herbal Medicine: With Particular Reference to the Chinese Umbelliferae

In the variety of Chinese herbal medicine books currently on offer, it may be easy to overlook Mark Wright's scholarly study of this major group of herbs, precisely because it has such a specialised focus. It deals with the Umbelliferae group, which includes such common herbs as Chai Hu, Du Huo and Dang  Gui.
However, within this framework, it provides a starting point for bringing together concepts derived from botany, phytochemistry and pharmocokinetics to give an enriched outlook on the classical Chinese tradition as it is used  today.

The ethos underpinning the whole book is that botanists, phytochemists,  biomedical doctors and Chinese herbalists should be co-operatively exploring the  interfaces between these allied disciplines. This book is an excellent illustration of how it can be done.

For each umbelliferae information on historical documentations, wild  distribution and habitat, cultivation and harvesting methods as well as classical Chinese medical lore is included. The illustrations for each are quite beautiful.

CHINA BOOKS is offering Mark Wright's book: 'An Introduction to Chinese  Herbal Medicine: With Particular Reference to the Chinese Umbelliferae' at the VERY SPECIAL PRICE of $80 (was $195).

WU XING: The Five Elements in Chinese Classical Texts

Elisabeth Rochat de la Vallée continues her exploration of the key concepts of Chinese medicine and philosophy with a study of Wu Xing, the five elements, phases or movements.

In the West, the concept of Wu Xing has been variously embraced or dismissed, often misunderstood, but never the subject of serious study in its historical context. This fascinating book traces the development of Wu Xing theory from its early beginnings - where we see the five elements in their literal sense, as the five materials necessary for survival on earth - to its incorporation into the sophisticated cosmological system of yinyang Wu Xing during the 2nd century BCE.

Guiding us through well chosen chapters of the Spring and Autumn Annals and its commentary, the Huainanzi, and the medical texts of the Neijing Suwen, Elisabeth explains the development of these ancient ideas which provide such an important basis for zangfu theory within Chinese medicine.
